Hello and welcome to Imperfect Game, less of a review blog and more of an excuse to talk about video games. I Am Tommy Lovett and today am covering Touhou 17: Wily Beast and Weakest Creature. I don’t really know much about the story other than that evil spirits are involved and that Reimu, Marisa, and Youmu are possessed by spirits claiming to be a good warning about something bad happening down in hell which does end about as well as one can expect. But enough about the story let’s talk gameplay, it's the standard stuff six stages with bosses at the end of each one more challenging than the last where you got to dodge and shoot your way to the end of the game. I see nothing noteworthy about stages and bosses, they're not bad by any means but I’ve seen better in earlier entries like Touhou 7 and 8. Though that could just be my opinion. The stages are a bit slow to me and feel like every enemy takes more shots than normal to take down. The music is outstanding as it’s got this alien vibe to it and it definitely makes me want to keep playing the game. The main gameplay gimmick is the spirits that you collect and that makes your character’s bullets stronger and adds a buffer to getting hit by bullets. If you collect at least three copies of the same spirit you get a unique gameplay-altering effect like a super-powered version of the current character’s shot types. The red wolves power up your focused shot, the blue eagle powers up your unfocused shots and the green otter just gives you the leaf shield from Megaman 2. In closing, it's a fine game, not one of my favorites but still a decent Touhou Project entry. You’re better off with Touhou 12 as it does the same gimmick only a bit better. Though that entry is a hard one.
